On 8 April 2008 European Commission has hearing on crimes committed by totalitarian regimes. Even as Commission is still afraid to name this hearing on crimes committed by communism, it is clear and positive step forward. It would be discussed how to improve knowledge about totalitarian crimes and how to promote public awareness about totalitarian crimes. Participants in hearing are experts from different memberstates, representatives of Commission and members of European Parliament. EPP as party has passed soon some years ago decision to urge its Parliamentary Group in European Parliament to initiate the declaration condemning the crimes of communism at the same way as crimes of nazism are condemned. Such declaration is soon passed by Parliamentary Assamble of Council of Europe. We can hope that with such hearings Europe moves nearer to the condemnation of communist crimes.
Dear Prime Minister Laar:
I apologize for writing to you knowing from newspaper accounts
how busy you are. Between you and President Ilves, Estonia is in the news
a great deal here in the U.S. I have tried to reach you through an old email address that I have for you which came back to me.
I have prepared this note on behalf of my stepfather’s nephew,
Carl Kikerpill. (My mother, Sula Hunerson Kikerpill, was married to Carl’s
uncle, Ants Kikerpill.) He and his family will be visiting Estonia in
June. Carl would very much appreciate the opportunity to meet with you.
Carl is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West
Point. At the conclusion of his military career, he went to work for one
of the Big Four accounting firms in the U.S., Deloitte Touche, in which he
is an executive. Carl would consider it an honor to meet you and be able
to discuss Estonian history and world affairs over lunch (if it suits your
schedule). His father was a member of the Estonian brigade that fought in
Sinemaa against the Soviet forces as they came back into Estonia. He also
was an Estonian volunteer who went to Finland to help fight in the Winter
War against the Soviets.
Carl’s dad founded and was the first President of the Estonian
Disabled Veterans organization (he lost a leg as a result of the fighting).
He returned to Estonia in 1993 to help rebuild the country where he died
and was buried in the family cemetery plot in Noo. Carl’s dad always
believed that Estonia would be free and independent again during his
lifetime. His prophesy and dream came to pass before his death in Sept 1994.
Like his dad, Carl has strong beliefs in and commitment to
Estonia, and this is why he admires you so much. He will be in Tallinn
starting the evening of June 21st thru the morning of June 24th. His
travels will take him to Tartu from June 24th thru the morning of June
27th, after which he returns to Tallinn on the evening of June 27th.
I know that you will enjoy meeting Carl. I hope that your
schedule permits you to speak with him. Should you care to contact him,
Carl’s e-mail address is: ckikerpill@deloitte.com.
We think of you often and send regards to your wife.
